We recently had the opportunity to attend one of Capito!’s popular Wine Dinners. Their food and wine pairing evenings have become somewhat of a culinary institution in Pretoria. What makes Capito!’s Wine Dinners unique is that, unlike other wine pairings, they don’t evolve around one wine-farm. Instead, chef Pellie creates dishes and with the help of Capito!’s sommelier pairs them with wines from different wine farms. We enjoyed a delicious Pinot Gris from Usana that was paired perfectly with an Apple Risotto, while dessert was paired with a Blaauwklippen Zinfandel to name but a few. What we enjoyed most about Capito!’s pairing was the out-of-the-box thinking. We thought pairing the first course of Melon and Prosciutto with a beautiful Bon Courage Noble Late Harvest was inspired.

Capito!’s Wine Dinners definitely have to be on your culinary bucket list. Wine Dinners are held once a month and seats are limited – so be sure to make a reservation. Keep an eye on their Instagram feed for the dates, or why not give them a call and ask them to add you to their WhatsApp group. That way you will be first to hear about their next Wine Dinner.

Three other reasons to visit Capito!

Chef Pellie is in the house

Chef Pellie Grobler joined the Capito! Team in October 2022. Before that you might have seen him in the kitchen of the very popular Black Bamboo Restaurant or Tin Roof Café. His passion to reinvent classic dishes by adding subtle twists has taken Capito’s already fantastic Italian offering up a notch. I especially love the fact that each plate he serves has a textual element which makes his food not only delicious but interesting.

Wine, wine, wine

Capito! has an impressive and comprehensive wine list. Wine lovers are sure to find a wine that tickles their fancy at Capito!. And don’t even get me started on their Prosecco offering.  The restaurant’s accomplished sommelier, Frans Visser, is also on hand to recommend the perfect wine for any dish and occasion.

Wonderful atmosphere and sterling service

Candle light, flowers and great background music. I love Capito!’s feel. The space is contemporary, but cozy. Stepping into Capito! feels like walking into your mom’s dining room (if your mom is Italian and a great cook).  The staff are friendly and attentive without being overbearing.

Capito! is a must when in Pretoria.
