Nestled deep in the Cedara Valley and only a short drive from the quaint villages of Howick and Hilton, Little Fields Country House and Cottages is the perfect spot from where to start your meander through the beautiful Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal.
Little Fields offers a Country house, as well as two country-style cottages – the Loft Cottage and the Fern Cottage, all of which are perfect for family and group getaways. But for a private hideout or romantic spot for two you’ll want to ask for their newest offering, the Green House.

It was already dark when we arrived. The weather was exactly what you expect (and hope for) when visiting the midlands – cold and wet. Phil and Bodger, Little Fields’ resident Golden Retriever, ushered us into the Green House, our home for the evening. We were soon curled up in-front of the crackling fire Phil had lit prior to our arrival.
Owners, Phil and Di Taylor’s exquisite taste in decor, and their love for plants, is evident in the Green House’s botanical themed decor. The crisp white linen and minimalistic use of furniture gives the space a clean-cut and modern feel. While the clever use of interesting pieces of art makes it feel warm and homey. The kitchen has everything you need and more. From a microwave and airfryer to a coffee plunger and a packet of local coffee Di and Phil have thought of everything. The assortment of stunning crockery had us wishing we were staying longer. After enjoying our dinner on the most exquisite green plates, we fell into the extra-length Queen bed for one of the best nights’ sleep we have had in ages.

We woke up to a chorus of birdsong and the most spectacular views of the wetland below our little cottage. Although the Green House is self-catering, Di loves treating her guests to something sweet for breakfast. She personally delivered a basket of freshly baked bran muffins, butter and a glass jar of jam to our doorstep. Although it was a cool morning we couldn’t help dragging ourselves outside to enjoy our muffins and coffee on our private deck while taking in the view and savouring the peace and quiet all around us.

I especially love Little Fields’ commitment to sustainability. They make use of solar power which minimises their carbon footprint and ensures comfort and convenience during loadshedding. They also grow and use their own produce, and encourage guests to forage for fruits and vegetables during their stay.
Little Fields Country House and Cottages truly is a special place where hospitality and nature meet. The peaceful and beautiful gardens invite and encourage guests to slow-down, rest, recharge and reflect. And that is exactly what we did. Thank you for your kindness and hospitality Phil and Di.
