As much as I love a beautiful Christmas tree and table, I can no longer ignore the negative effect our traditional Christmas celebrations have on our planet. So, this year, I have been on the look out for more sustainable alternatives. Here are my favourite ideas and products.
Have fun with indigenous flowers and materials
Replace that fake plastic reeve and table decorations with a simple vase filled with flowers or shrubbery from your garden. If you want to buy flowers, opt for indigenous flowers like Proteas or Pincushions. They make a beautiful statement and will last into the new year. Woolworths and Checkers have a wonderful range of indigenous flowers.

A Christmas table with a difference
I love decorating my table with decorations from our Christmas tree. This year I will be swapping our plastic baubles and decorations for more sustainable options. I love these fabric tree decorations from Mr Price Home. Speaking about fabric, why not consider investing in fabric napkins this year. They always look beautiful and classy on a table, and if cared for correctly will last for many Christmases. These simple wooden napkin rings can also be found at Mr Price Home.

Replace store-bought wrapping paper
Pieces of fabric, brown paper bags and delivery boxes make great alternatives to store-bought wrapping paper. Decorate them with a beautiful fabric ribbon and you are good to go.

The gift of leftovers
Gift your guests with a reusable container and send them home with leftovers in it. If you are sending them home with a plate of leftovers consider covering it with a beeswax wrap or cloth dish cover instead of plastic clingwrap.

Here’s to a festive and more sustainable Christmas.
