As the days grow longer and the temperature begins to rise, it’s time to swap those cozy reds for refreshing wines that complement the spirit of spring. In my mind, just as certain wines pair well with certain dishes, there are wines whose flavours seem to fit the season of spring so well.

As the first purple flowers of the Jacaranda trees announce Spring’s arrival I find myself craving what I think of as paradigmatic springtime wines: whether it is the crisp bubbles of a Cap Classique, or a good-quality Rosé. Raise a glass with me to life and the season that embodies it.

Wilhelmina Cap Classique from Piekenierskloof

The Wilhelmina from Piekenierskloof is most definitely one of my season favourites. Named after the farm’s matriarch and the driving force behind founder Johan Abraham van Zyl, this rare and special Grenache Noir Methode Cap Classique is beautifully fresh. With its layers of strawberries and red fruit it pairs well with salads and seafood dishes like oysters, sushi and prawns. It truly is the perfect wine for a warm spring day.

Vergenoegd Löw Cab Franc Rosé 2025

For me Rosé is a spring and summer staple. I will be stocking up on Vergenoegd Löw‘s Cab Franc Rosé this spring. Its subtle shade of onion skin with the palest of pink hues in the glass makes it perfect for springtime picnics. The delicately perfumed nose reveals delectable traces of Turkish delight with fresh red berries on the palate.  This refined heritage Rosé is perfect for light meals, summer gatherings, or sipping on its own. The barely discernible smoky notes in the wine pair well with a charcuterie board. Or pair it with chicken espetadas or vegetable skewers done on the coals. Only available from the farm at R192 per bottle.

Soils of Paarl – The Ahrens Family

White grapes don’t have the monopoly on spring wines anymore. Lighter style reds like Soils of Paarl from Ahrens Family Wines are perfect for the Spring season. This wine is made from several vineyards from the northern valley of Paarl. Grenache and Cinsault are both lighter style red varietals, well suited to the warmer climate of the northern Paarl Valley. Carignan & Syrah bring structure and texture respectively to this blend. This valley has the benefit of a cooling breeze during the hot summer months due to its proximity to the cold Atlantic ocean. This enhances the perfumy elegance of the wine. Pair it with a homemade beef burger or prego roll.

Happy Spring sipping!
