Who would have imagined that your recycling could buy you shares? Thanks to a world first partnership between Imagined Earth and EasyEquities you can now turn your recycling into shares!
Imagined Earth has several Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) that reward you for recycling. At this stage they only have RVMs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but plan to expand the offering to more locations in the country. Each item you recycle through the reverse vending machine earns you cash in your Imagined Earth wallet, which can be used for several things – including buying shares through EasyEquities.
The Imagined Earth system works with product bar codes. You simply scan the barcode with the Imagined Earth App which then indicates whether the article you have is able to be recycled through the RVMs or not. You then take all your recyclable material to your nearest RVM and turn your waste into shares on EasyEquities.
Being a lazy app-downloader, I decided not to download the app and just took my recycling to the RVM in the Foodcourt at Sandton City. This worked just fine accept that I ended up taking a few articles, that the vending machine refused, home with me. I also learned that you need the Imagined Earth App to be able to link your EasyEquities account. I ended up sitting in the Foodcourt and downloading the app from the app store, which turned out to be remarkably simple. You can download the Imagined Earth App HERE .
You can find Imagined Earth’s Reverse Vending Machines in Johannesburg at Sandton City, Pick n Pay on Nicol, Shell Hyde Park and Shell Parkhurst, and in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront, Shell at Taronga Motors, Pick n Pay Camps Bay and Woolworths Palmyra Junction.
I love this initiative, because it not only is incentivising good behaviour, but also giving people cash back for their waste, as well as providing a convenient recycling solution enabling everyone to do their bit to save the planet.
